New Features for Police and Professional Flashlights

By Ben Anton

Today's law enforcement agencies can take advantage of the newest technological advances in many different ways. Not only can those who fight crime have access to devices that seem to come right out of James Bond spy movies, they can use equipment similar to what's used on television's CSI drama series.

Manufacturers of the latest in police gear have announced some surprising inventions that are now available, but perhaps still a little difficult to get. However, within a year these devices should be easily accessible, and within a few they may even be "standard issue" for many police departments.

Many seasoned police veterans may wonder what could possibly be new with regards to flashlights to make their job easier. Well, heavy duty flashlights and tactical flashlights used by police can now do more than shed light on a scene or a perpetrator.

Since LED police flashlights are the tool of choice in many areas, some companies have simply focused on making them even more dependable and sturdy than they already are. They've been dropping the flashlights from 30 feet to test durability, submerging them to check for an ability to stay waterproof, and timing not only the shining time, but the overall life time of the batteries. There are now dozens of suppliers of police flashlights that provide specific product specifications, including the wattage, lumens, scope of light, and hazardous condition defense.

As with any product, however, the best thing to do is to determine local and user needs and compare what's available to what the budget may allow. Some tactical or heavy duty flashlights may cost as little at $40 each, but some can go up to $200-not including battery chargers, holsters, clips for attaching to clothes or duty belts, or built-in extras.

The most important aspects of police flashlights would be ease of use and dependability, since they must continuously function under high-risk conditions. Certain LED models claim hundreds of hours of light use, convenient on/off buttons, and an almost indefinite life span.

Even though all offer consistent light without dimming, LED flashlights can vary by size and weight. Some officers may prefer the lighter ones, while others may prefer the heavier, as they then can be used as a weapon. One department may wish to use only the high-intensity white LED light bulbs, while another city's force may wish to utilize the advantages of colored bulbs for night vision, checking blood trails, or signaling.

It's clear that different police departments, and even different officers within the same city, could face a range of dangerous situations. These call for specialty police flashlights. Almost every officer would be able to utilize a flashlight that can cut through smoke and offer adjustable beams of light, but there may not be as frequent a need for the more upgraded features on a regular basis.

There is a model that contains a pepper-spray canister, a flashlight that can detect metal (vibrating and flashing a red light when encountering metal), one that creates glow-in-the-dark patterns, and even styles which provide beacon or strobe-light effects. Plus, to further enhance weaponry, police flashlights are now providing laser-aiming devices, gun mounting capabilities, and shotguns hidden within the flashlights' bodies.

A police department which is considering flashlight replacement should take advantage of the opportunity to upgrade; never before have so many features been available.

LED and Traditional Flashlights, What Kind of Flashlight is Best For You?

By Ben Anton

If you have recently lost or broke a flashlight, or if you are in the market for a new, better brand, then you are probably facing a lot of decisions about what kind of flashlight to purchase, and what will work best for your various needs. LED flashlights have risen in popularity, as have batteryless flashlights. So what kind of flashlight is best for you and your family?

A traditional flashlight
These days, traditional flashlights use batteries to power light bulbs. Depending on the type, these lights can be weak or strong, with professional quality lights putting out better beams than the cheap flashlights that you might find on the racks of a home improvement or department store. The bulbs are not terribly energy efficient, meaning that they go through batteries a lot faster than LED lights, and the bulbs burn out a lot faster than LEDs as well. Overall, these are not recommended if you are buying a new flashlight. Spend a couple extra dollars on some quality gear.

Manual power flashlights
Manual power flashlights do not use batteries. Instead, they use cranks, triggers (which you squeeze repeatedly) or are simply shaken to create the power needed to run an LED light. (Usually, these flashlights do not produce enough power to get a reliable beam out of a traditional incandescent bulb.) These good for quick uses like taking a quick look at the fuse box, but require a lot of shaking, turning, or squeezing to make them continue to run. Users usually tire out quickly, so dont plan to use them for nighttime walks or other long-term applications. On the plus side, you will never be caught without batteries again.

Flashlight Size matters
If you are looking for a light to stow in your car or emergency kit, you will want a small light that still puts out a bright beam. LED flashlights are best for this application, hands down, and manual power lights are great for emergency kits as a backup for when batteries run out. Keep both kinds of light stocked so that you will have a stronger light if you need it. Use the manual light for brief uses, like checking on your childs skinned knee, and the battery powered light to scan for danger or signal for help.

If you are looking for something good for hunting or camping, you will likely want a more powerful light that will illuminate a good area brightly or present a focused beam on whatever you want to see. These lights work great for signaling at a distance, or even better for late night walks or treks to the toilet hole. LED is, again, hands down the best choice, but only if you can find a professional quality light that presents the features (broad vs. narrow beam) that you need.

All in all, it is almost impossible to beat an LED light for applications ranging from pen lights to LED camping lanterns. There are many features available, so choose your LED flashlight with care, and be prepared to use it for many years to come. You too will soon find that these LED flashlights are made to last.

A Flashlight Which Can Last For Up To 100,000 Hours, Light Emitting Diodes

By Gerry Fung

The problem with the standard flashlight is that either their batteries or their bulbs seem to be dead every time theres a power failure. Unless you have ultraviolet vision, changing batteries in the dark, assuming that you have them, can be an exercise in futility.

Before 1990, LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) were used in electronic equipment, digital signs, and key ring lights. A LED is a semiconductor device that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light when electrically biased in the forward direction. This effect is a form of electroluminescence. The color of the emitted light depends on the composition and condition of the semi-conducting material used, and can be infrared, visible or near-ultraviolet. The main limitation of the LED was that before 1990, it was difficult to adapt LEDs for commercial use because they only emitted coloured light. But then, in 1993, Shuji Nakamura won the distinction of developing the first high-brightness GaN LED which was able to emit bluish-white light.

Nowadays, LEDs are everywhere, and are especially common in flashlights. The advantages of a LED flashlight are tremendous. LEDs can be significantly more efficient at lower power levels, and use less battery energy than normal lightbulbs. LED flashlights also have longer battery lifetimes, and in some cases can run hundreds of hours before the batteries are drained (although the LED efficiency advantage diminishes at higher power levels). Not only do LEDs consume significantly less power than traditional flashlights, but the LED bulb also lasts for up to 100,000 hours.

Because of the extremely efficient nature of the LED bulb, very little power is required to generate bright light. Therefore, a small LED flashlight, such as the Trailblazer LED flashlight (with up to 21 super-bright LED bulbs), generates relatively little heat. Made of durable aluminium construction, Trailblazers LED flashlights are made to last. If you consider the fact that LEDs can survive sharp blows that often break conventional lightbulbs, this flashlight could easily last an entire lifetime.

Please go to AlgraShopping.com for more information about the Trailblazer LED flashlight.

Winter Hiking - Safety and Precautions For A Fun Winter Sport

By Ben Anton

Winter hiking can be a tranquil even surreal experience when done properly. The peace of walking through cold and wintry scenes captured in the outdoors is considered by many to be a great way to spend a day. Additional precautions are needed when hiking in the winter, however, as winter weather can create a number of issues not typically a problem in the summer. It is important to protect yourself from both colder temperatures and potential winter hazards this time of year. Making sure that you have the right equipment for your hike and taking extra time planning so that you can avoid many potentially dangerous situations are important to winter hiking safety.

Essential Equipment

Proper equipment is a winter hiking essential. Your biggest priorities are going to be making sure that you have light and warmth when you need it, as well as food and water to keep you from becoming dehydrated or hungry. A basic multipurpose tool or a pocket knife is important for any hiking situation. A small first aid kit is too. LED flashlights are the smartest choice for a light source. They use very little energy (batteries) and therefore will last much longer than a standard light. Pack both thermal blankets and chemical heat packs to ensure that you and your companions will be able to stay warm enough if caught out in unexpected bad weather. If you'll be camping during your hike, invest in a sleeping bag that's designed to keep you warm in low temperatures. Make sure that you pack all of the necessary equipment that you would bring in warmer weather, and be sure that you put an extra emphasis on safety and first aid.

Careful Planning

When you're planning your hiking trip, take extra time to plan out your route. Do your research and see if you can find out about any safety advisories in the area where you want to hike, and adjust your equipment list as needed to accommodate for any special circumstances that you might encounter based on these warnings. If you're planning a multi-day hiking trip, you might want to have an LED flashlight that has a lantern function as well so that you can illuminate larger areas with it. Begin watching weather reports several days in advance of when your trip is planned for so that you can make any necessary adjustments to your plans. Once your plan is set, make sure you notify two to three people of your expected route and plans for return so they can alert the proper authorities if you do not return as scheduled.

Being Mindful of Temperature

Temperatures often drop quickly during the winter, and it can be very easy to underestimate the effects of these temperature shifts. You must also be mindful of the amount of sweat that your body can produce even in cold weather, as it can not only lead to you having wet clothes and skin in cold weather but you can also be in danger of dehydration. Quickly dropping temperatures can increase your likelihood of becoming sick and can also put you at risk for hypothermia. Because of this, in addition to any blankets or heat packs that you bring, it's important that you dress appropriately for the projected temperatures on the day or days that you'll be hiking. Dress in layers and bring extra shirts, jackets, pants, or other clothing that can be added with relative ease if necessary.

LED Flashlights: Promotional Mini Flashlight Keychains

By Scott Shenkel

Functional and practical items have always made ideal promotional items and mini LED flashlight keychains are no exception. Custom engraved or imprinted LED flashlight keychains are being used by and businesses and individuals for a variety of special events from tradeshows and conferences to parties and reunions.

Mini flashlights have become indispensable objects in our everyday lives and can be found everywhere from our homes and cars to our camping gear and keychains. Due to their small size these mini flashlights are typically carried on keychains. Basically, mini flashlights with two types of bulbs are being used; those with light emitting diodes (leds) and incandescent (filament) bulbs. LEDs are by far the most widely used. Compared to incandescent bulbs they are brighter, longer lasting and are available in an assortment of beam colors ie. red, blue, green etc. Because the batteries (button cells) used to power LEDs are smaller than those used for filament bulbs (AAA), Mini LED flashlights can be made much smaller as well as flatter than filament bulb flashlights.

Typically youll see button cell batteries for LED devices in the shape of flat silver discs (that look like buttons, hence the name button cells) in a variety of sizes and voltages. The voltage needed to power a filament type mini flashlight bulb is 1.5V compared to 6.0V for a LED.

Today promotional mini led flashlight keychains can be found in both anodized aluminum as well as durable plastic in a variety of colors and custom shapes. Customization methods used for these promotional mini flashlights include laser engraving for flashlights with aluminum shells and either pad printing or full color process printing for flashlights encased in plastic. Laser engraving produces a bright white image by removing the surface anodized color coating exposing the color of the aluminum underneath. Pad printing typically produces an image in a single color. The disadvantage of pad printing is that it is prone to wear and will scratch off over time. Full color process printing is the method of choice for printing custom shaped mini flashlights. Here the full color image is first printed on white vinyl with an adhesive back and then contour cut to the exact shape of the flashlights imprint area. The advantages of this type of printing and application is that multi color logos can be reproduced and the imprints wont wear or scratch off.

Today mini led flashlight keychains can be found incorporated into a variety of different products with multiple functions including carabiners, pens, bottle openers, whistles and more. Mini flashlight keychains made from anodized aluminum in the basic tube and carabiner shapes have become the industry standard for promotional flashlights. For a complete selection of blank and custom engraved mini flashlights at below wholesale prices visit www.keychainsinc.com

So whats the origin of the highly successful promotional mini LED flashlights? Certainly, flashlights with standard incandescent bulbs preceded flashlights using LEDs. The tubular flashlight as we know it was invented in 1896 by David Misell. Before then people were left to very unsafe methods utilizing oil lamps for finding their way in the dark. Early flashlight models were very inefficient due to limitations in both battery and light bulb design. They were capable of producing only short pulses of light, hence the name flashlight. Also, they were big and bulky due the large size of the batteries at the time. Development of more reliable flashlights followed closely with the evolution of batteries and light bulbs.

The invention of the smaller and lighter weight D cell battery in 1888 made possible the development of the first truly practical hand-held portable flashlight. Brighter and longer lasting light bulbs were made possible in1906 with the replacement of Edisons carbon filament with tungsten.

Today both incandescent and the newer more powerful and longer lasting LED flashlights can be found everywhere in all shapes, sizes and colors. Visit www.keychainsinc.com for a wide selection of blank and customized mini led flashlight keychains at below wholesale prices.

A Brief History of Flashlights

By Natalie Aranda

Humans have been looking for ways to create portable light sources since the beginning of history. Tree branches gave way to torches which were later replaced by candles and kerosene lamps. The problem was that you still had to rely on fire for light which was dangerous and impractical in certain situations.

The flashlight would soon be the answer to all of these problems. The history of the flashlight really begins with the invention of the light bulb by Thomas Edison in 1879. Edison used a carbon filament, but it was replaced in 1906 by a tungsten wire filament. Around the same time, work was being done to create a portable battery. A German scientist, Dr. Carl Gassner, created the first battery in 1888.

The first flashlight was invented in 1898 by Conrad Hubert. He worked alongside David Misell, who would go on to invent the tubular flashlight. Conrad Huberts company, The American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company filed several patents related to flashlights in 1898. (Huberts company would later become Eveready.)

The flashlight changed form a few times, but the basic idea stayed the same. In recent years, however, there has been an increase in flashlights which do not require the use of batteries. This means they are ready to go whenever you need them. LED flashlights still use batteries but they are an improvement over traditional flashlights because they are able to run a significant amount longer on one set of batteries. They also have very bright lights which remain consistent even as the batteries begin to fail. Surefire flashlights are an excellent choice if you are looking for a high quality LED flashlight. Streamlight flashlights are also top of the line.

Today most flashlights fall into two categories. There are flashlights that are very bright which are used by police officers, the military and security teams. These flashlights can be quite advanced and are often expensive. Most people require a much simpler flashlight which is less expensive. You can find flashlights of almost every shape and size starting at only a few dollars.

The flashlight has come a long way from its simple beginnings. It has truly revolutionized portable lighting. As advances in technology continue to occur, it seems likely that at some point battery operated flashlights will be obsolete.

If you are interested in learning more about flashlights, there are several online sites which have photographs which show the progression of the flashlight. There are even flashlight museums that you can visit in order to get a closer look at how the flashlight has changed through the years.

Natalie aranda writes about shopping. LED flashlights have very bright lights which remain consistent even as the batteries begin to fail. Surefire flashlights are an excellent choice if you are looking for a high quality LED flashlight. Streamlight flashlights are also top of the line. Today most flashlights fall into two categories. Maglite Led Upgrade-Not All Created Equal

By Otti Newhouse

Original Maglite LED upgrades

Mag has two models in the Mini line upgraded to LED and sold as complete new LED flashlights. They also rolled out upgrade kits for some of the models in the C and D series.

But these are not the only way to upgrade your trusted Mag lite flashlight to LED.

Third party conversion kits

Third party kits are also available and getting better too. With these upgrade kits you can pretty much upgrade any Mag model. However, not all of those kits are created equal.

When you find a label that says your kit will void the original Mag warranty, you might want to shop a bit more. Because there are third party kits out there officially claiming - and obviously delivering the benefits of - not to void the original warranty. And you never know when you end up calling up on that assurance over the long life of your trusted and durable Mag lite.

LED bulb upgrades and kits

Moreover, there are LED bulb kits available to upgrade your Mag lite to LED just by replacing the old bulb. Both single and multiple bulb kits (ususally with 3 LED units) are available. However, as an upgrade, your preference should generally be given to single LED bulbs. Here's why.

LEDs do not have one single resistance so they operate at various voltages passing various currents. If there is more than one LED in a kit they will have slightly different performance characteristics. But those slight differences could amount to drastically different operating voltages and currents. This way they could effectively shorten each other's bright life phase. And if that happens they will tend to turn into bluish and quite possibly lose a substantial part of their brightness.

Preparing a Home Earthquake Kit

By Ben Anton

If you live in an area prone to seismic activity, it's vitally important that you have an earthquake kit in your house or in your car so that you'll have emergency supplies if you need them. Even if you don't live in an area that is prone to earthquakes, you might want to create a basic disaster survival kit to be used in case of tornados or other types of natural disasters.

Ideally, your earthquake kit should contain enough supplies for you and your family to survive for a period of up to three days. Beyond the basic considerations of food and water that are physically necessary for survival, you will also need a few additional items to help you make it through the aftermath of an earthquake.

One of the first things that you'll need is some sort of light source in case the electricity has been knocked out in your area. Since you're going to want to make sure that your light will work when needed, your best bet is to choose an LED flashlight or lantern since they have a drastically reduced energy usage and will keep a charge longer in storage than most standard flashlights. Test any LED flashlight that you have every few months to make sure that it still works, and if you're using a lantern that has multiple lighting modes then you should take the time to test every one of its modes.

Another essential piece of equipment is a multi-purpose tool that has knife blades, pliers, screwdrivers, and even saw blades and can openers in it. Be sure to store your multi-purpose tool with your LED lantern or LED flashlights so that you can find it quickly once you've located your light source. You'd be amazed at how useful a multi-purpose tool can be after an earthquake, and you may even find uses for it that you've never considered.

Also in your earthquake kit should be a fully-stocked first aid kit so that you can treat any injuries that might have occurred during the earthquake. Make sure that you have common items such as blankets, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer with your first aid kit so that you can cover basic needs and provide warmth and sanitation for anyone who is suffering from shock as well.

Other useful things to include in your earthquake kit include enough money or traveler's checks to be able to meet any monetary needs that you might have in case the banks are closed due to the earthquake. You should also have a safe with copies of any important documents that you don't want to be lost or damaged in an earthquake, as well as clean clothes for both warm and cold weather so that you and your family won't be forced to wear the same clothes for several days in a row.

Make sure that you check the expiration dates on any food or medicine that you keep in your earthquake kit, and change out any stored water that you have every few months. This will prevent you or your family members from getting sick due to expired food or stale water.

Preparing an earthquake kit is an important activity that should be done as a family to ensure that everyone knows how to use the items inside and where to find it if an earthquake occurs. Being prepared for a disaster may very well save a person's life.

Led Emergency Lights

By Steve Valentino

LED emergency lights are portable devices that are used for dealing with emergency situations such as power outrages and blackouts caused due to hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning, flooding, and blown out street transformers. They are designed for rough use and can withstand shocks and vibrations that may occur while using it in emergencies.

These devices are powered with batteries, which can be used to provide power to an AM or FM radio for keeping users updated on the latest civil and natural emergencies occurring in the local area that might affect power supply. They may also be equipped with a removable LED flashlight and indicator lights that automatically turn on when household power shuts off.

These devices often contain 12-volt batteries that can be fully recharged by connecting it to A/C power sockets for ten to twelve hours. Emergency LED lights can provide power for four to six hours depending on its watt power and usage. Power availability is significantly increased if the battery present inside these devices is replaced with deep cycle batteries used for industrial purposes.

The efficiency of emergency LED lights is defined according to the relation between the light intensity emitted and the electrical current that produce this radiation. The color of LED lights is usually red, green, and yellow-orange those have been standardized by the manufacturers depending on the radiation frequency. However, in case of emergency LED lights, this radiation is not visible, which gives it the color of standard lights used in households.

The only drawback of emergency LED lights is that batteries used in these provide power for a limited duration and need to be recharged, which may not be possible if the power remains unavailable for more than a day. It is better to purchase an emergency LED light that can be connected externally to a car or truck battery.

Survival Kit Basics - What to Pack When Going Camping or Hiking

By Ben Anton

Many people think they know what to do if they get lost while camping or hiking yet hundreds each year wander off into the woods unprepared, finding that they do not have the tools that they need to survive in the wild. When you are going to be going off into the woods for a camping or hiking trip, even if you are only going a little ways away to gather firewood or explore a new trail, make sure that you have your survival kit on you in case you get lost.

Even the most attentive adult can find that they have wandered off the beaten trail, and finding your way back can be more difficult than you anticipate. Before you set off into the woods, make sure that you have a pack prepared with food like energy bars or trail mix to keep you moving, plenty of water, dry, protected matches, a space blanket to keep you warm and to signal for help during the day, an LED flashlight or LED lantern for use at night, a compass, and the best survival knife that you can find or afford.

You will want an LED flashlight instead of a regular flashlight for several reasons. For one thing, the LED flashlight, even a mini LED flashlight, will burn brighter than a traditional light, making you easier to spot. The LED light will also use less battery power, so that your flashlight lasts longer, and your bulb will burn for many times longer than a traditional bulb, meaning that you wont have to remember to change bulbs out between trips.

You will need to start out with food and water, however if you are stuck in the wilds for very long, you will need to know how to catch and eat animals for food or how to find food naturally in your area. Local guides will be able to tell you which plants are good to eat and which are not, and will even be able to tell you what kinds of animals are prevalent in your area, increasing your chances of setting the right traps or of hunting the right spots. For these pursuits, you will need a survival knife or a folding pocket knife.

Survival knives are supposed to be able to handle just about anything that you need them to do, from sawing through branches that can be used to make a shelter to catching and cleaning animals for food or digging for roots. These knives can be simple small pocket knives as long as they get the job done, but keep in mind that skimping on your knife could mean skimping on the tool best suited to ensure your survival.

Once you realize that you are lost, it is time to stop moving. Rescuers will begin to look for you where you were last known to be, so wandering farther away could delay a successful rescue. If you know where civilization is, however, then take out your compass and make your way back to the road or the trail.

If you are waiting for help to arrive, lay out colorful clothing or your space blanket in an area that is easy to see from above so that rescuers can find you from the air. You will need to keep your food and water as long as possible, so start looking for food and water sources right away, and do not be shy about setting up camp by making a shelter and covering it with your bright clothing. You need to keep warm and dry in order to preserve your energy. Above all remember to stay calm, and you will find yourself safe in no time.

LED Lenser; Technology Yields Survival and Convenience

By Ben Anton

Think quickly - if you found yourself stranded far from home with no easy access to things like lights, running water and shelter, what things would you want to have at your side? If you suddenly found your modern home without the power to run such conveniences as electric lights, can openers and microwave oven, what should you have at hand to get you through the hours or days till those utilities returned?

The U.S. government recommends that every citizen should have - either in their home or in their car - 72 Hour Survival Kit, and if you've thought about the questions above, it should come as no surprise that two of the first items listed in that kit are a knife and a flashlight. No matter what your emergency may be, a source of light and a good cutting edge will always be important.

A Swiss army knife has been a mainstay of survival gear for decades. More than just a cutting tool, a well-chosen Swiss army knife is a survival kit in a compact, folding package. There's far more to them than the one or two cutting blades and the bottle opener that features in most of the cheaper knives. Features that are important in a Swiss army knife include:

- locking blade
- compact size
- lightweight
- sharp, durable cutting blades
- at least one sawing blade
- a can/bottle opener
- a flint

A Swiss army knife is not, strictly speaking, a survival knife, though. For that, most survival experts recommend a fixed blade knife that can be used for cutting, sawing, knife hunting, skinning, cleaning, notching and a multitude of other uses. There are dozens of available styles and types of survival knife, making it easy to choose the best one for your use. The most valuable of them combine a sturdy, sharp, fixed blade with a hollow handle that holds the most important items for you to have with you in an emergency. Those items may include matches, tinder, aspirin, disinfectant, a small flashlight or signaling device and a whistle. Before choosing a survival knife, you should check your state and city statutes to ensure that the knife you want to purchase doesn't violate any laws.

If the last time you bought a new flashlight was more than a few years ago, you may be surprised at what technology has wrought in just a few short years. LED technology has given us a new class of LED flashlights that won't die on you just when you need them most. LED - light emitting diodes - technology has been used for decades in such things as watch displays and digital alarm clocks, but they were always considered too expensive and too low powered to be used for workhorse lighting tasks like flashlights and emergency lights. As late as 2002, one of the leading researchers in the field of lighting estimated that LED lights would be in common use in the home within twenty years. A year later, he admitted that he had grossly miscalculated because, "...we erred in presuming only incremental advances and excluding... major technological breakthroughs.." Those breakthroughs made it far less expensive to manufacture LED lights, and brought them within the price range of the everyday consumer.

So why should you consider replacing your common flashlights with LED flashlights? The reasons range from better light to longer battery life. They include:

LED flashlights use a two-step process that produces light that is closer to natural sunlight. And unlike typical flashlights that go out when the battery power is low, LED flashlights often continue to function at a dimmer brightness for hours or even days.

The bulb in LED flashlights draws far less power, increasing battery life astronomically - some LED lights boast battery life of over 50,000 hours. No more frustration of worn-out batteries, or lights that die when you need them most.

Unlike typical tungsten lights, LED flashlights are sturdy enough to withstand being jostled and dropped. In tests, every LED flashlight dropped from 4-6 feet onto concrete survived and continued to provide strong, bright light.

LED flashlights come in sizes from tiny to super - small enough to hang from a keychain to full size utility lights that can illuminate an entire room.

Indeed, flashlights are not the only LED lighting that you'll find handy in an emergency. Battery operated LED kitchen lighting can provide illumination not only in an emergency, but in areas that overhead and typical lighting doesn't reach. A few strategically placed under counter LED lamps or sticks can make it easy to find pots and pans or stored foods in dark spaces. Likewise, LED lamps mounted on the wall of a closet, crawlspace or attic can help prevent accidents and make it far easier to find precisely what you're looking for.

If you havent considered your 72 Hour Kit, this is an excellent time to put one together. Todays modern technology offers many options to ensure that youre prepared for any emergency that might happen.

Vehicle Emergencies - The Importance of an LED Emergency Light

By Ben Anton

When you are navigating the roadways, it's important to remember that anything can happen to you and your vehicle at any time. Your vehicle could breakdown, you could get a flat tire, you could be in an accident or you may come across one. When any of these events happen to you, it helps if you are prepared. One of the ways that you can be prepared for any eventuality is to have an emergency kit in your vehicle. You can purchase them at a hardware or outdoors store - a compact emergency kit that fits nicely into your vehicle without being in the way. They usually contain candles, an emergency blanket, flares, road cones, waterproof matches, and a flashlight or emergency light source.

There are, of course, many uses for a flashlight or emergency light sources in your vehicle, especially if you are in a collision, have a flat tire, or if your vehicle breaks down. Where any light source will come in handy, most experts recommend having a LED flashlight or light source in your car because of they have a longer battery and bulb light than traditional flashlights, have a brighter, further-reaching light beam, and come in smaller, compact forms that are easier to carry in your car.

For a vehicle breakdown, a flashlight or emergency light source can help you:

 Flag down traffic for assistance

Keep your vehicle visible if you have no working lights. You can use the flashlight to act as a taillight. This will allow oncoming traffic to see you and be able to get out of the way and avoid hitting you.

Act as a flashing signal light - many of the emergency light sources have a flashing light on them as well that can act like hazard lights on your vehicle, once again alerting other drivers of your whereabouts.

See what's wrong with your vehicle. If you have no power, you may be able to fix it yourself, but it's quite difficult to do on a dark road at night with no light. A flashlight or emergency light source can help you look into the problem with your vehicle and maybe even aid you in making the repairs.

Help you fix a flat tire - while the flashlight won't be able to loosen those lug nuts for you, it can certainly shed some light on the situation. Also, because you will be crouching and sitting on the side of the road, other motorists may not see you. Having a flashlight or emergency light source will alert other drivers that you are also on the roadway and increase your safety while you are changing the tire.

In the event that you are in an accident, a flashlight can come in handy for many reasons. It can help to survey the damage of your vehicle or the other vehicle or vehicles involved in the collision. You can also use it to flag down other vehicles and warn them of your presence on the roadway. In some cases, you may also need to navigate uncertain terrain, such as a field, either to get to a collision scene to help, or escape from one. A flashlight can help light your path and avoid falling, tripping and other injuries that walking over uneven terrain could cause.

Flashlights and emergency light sources are very helpful for many reasons - and having one in your vehicle, that is reliable and works, is important. You never know when you're going to need a flashlight or emergency light source.

The Right Type of Flashlight

By Keith George

A flashlight, also called a torch is a portable device used for illumination and usually has battery cells for power. A flashlight usually consists of a small electric light bulb, a compartment for batteries which power the bulb, a switch for the bulb and a parabolic reflector for focusing the light. The battery compartment also acts like a handle for holding the flashlight.

Though the flashlight is of a very simple design, it is a relatively new invention. It came into being after the incandescent light bulb and the dry cell was invented.

The name flashlight has a humorous background. In the early days of the dry cell, the power of a dry cell battery was very limited. To save the dry cell from discharging quickly, the flashlight was operated intermittently and just long enough to check out the environments, hence the name flashlight.

There are many flashlight designs available in the market today. Like dry cell flash lights, rechargeable acid type flashlights, rechargeable dry cell type, LED (Light Emitting Diode) type, solar charging type, electromagnet type, head lamp type, underwater type, rifle or gun light etc.

The dry cell flashlight is the simplest design and used in most households and consists of dry cells to power the electric bulb. As the batteries discharge the illumination dims in these flashlights.

Rather than buying a flashlight, which needs battery replacement frequently, a better design is to use rechargeable batteries, which can be lead acid type or dry cell type.

Some use solar panels for recharging during daytime. Electromagnet type uses a clockwork arrangement or a knob arrangement. In clockwork arrangement a spring mechanism is used to power the flashlight and has to be wound as required. The knob type arrangement has a moving coil or magnet which moves when the knob is pressed and charges a capacitor, which provides power to the bulb.

LED type flashlights are of a recent design. Though LED:s have been around for decades, the LED flashlight was not available till late 90s because the LED:s could not be operated continuously and their luminosity was very poor.

LED flashlights consume very little power compared to the conventional electric bulb as LED:s do not produce as much heat as electric bulb. LED flashlights usually have a metal body to dissipate heat by conduction since LED:s do not dissipate heat through the light beam like electric bulbs do.

A headlamp type has a flashlight on a helmet so that the hands are free. Underwater type is a special flashlight, which is used for illuminating underwater objects and is waterproof. Rifle or gun lights are special flashlights used for illumination of target.

Flashlights are fairly cheap and available in attractive designs. The price ranges from a few dollars to a couple of hundred dollars.

Winter Camping Equipment Essentials

By Ben Anton

Winter camping is exciting and adventurous. Camping in the cold elements can be a lot of fun, as long as you are prepared for your trip. It is important that you plan ahead for your winter camping to be sure that your trip will be both safe and enjoyable. Before you head out, be sure to have an itinerary and share it with a friend or family member, in case there is an emergency. Make a plan to check in so that in the event something does happen to you, your family will know to send help to you and where to send it, should you not check in by your agreed time.

There is some equipment that you will need for your camping trip in the winter. Be sure that you get recommended winter camping equipment that is made for the season and temperatures.

You will need a sleeping bag for cold weather. When you use your sleeping bag, change into warm, dry clothing and socks before jumping in for the night. You will also want to heat your sleeping bag before settling in for the night - you can do this by lying on top of it for a while.

Knives

It is important to have cutting utensils with you on your winter camping trip. A variety of knives will suit all your needs and purposes. A puma knife is a straight blade knife that folds back and locks open. This is your powerhouse knife, for big cutting jobs, such as ropes or even dinner. A pocket knife is something you should keep with you all the time for the smaller jobs where a puma knife is too large. You will also want to carry a survival knife with you. A survival knife is excellent for any style of camping. With multiple knife blades, screwdrivers, and scissors, it can help you while you are camping in numerous situations.

Lighting

It is important to ensure you have ample lighting while you are winter camping. The days are much shorter in the winter time and a good portion of your camping day is still in the darkness. A LED lantern is ideal for illuminating a campsite as well as for hiking trails or caves. LED lanterns burn cool and are long lasting. They don't use as much battery power as a standard lantern or light bulb so you will not have to worry as much about batteries. However, you will still want to bring extras, just in case. If you plan on doing any hiking, climbing or caving during your winter camping trip, be sure to invest in a LED headlamp. They provide lighting without taking up your hands - leaving them free for your activities. Like all quality LED gear, they also use less energy and the light is much stronger than with a regular light bulb.

One of the most important lights you will take with you is a flashlight. Keep one with you all the time, especially at night, in case you need to get up to use the washroom or for any reason at all. LED flashlights last much longer than a regular flashlight too and are available in a number of compact sizes.

You are easily prepared for your winter camping trip if you keep these things in mind. Pack enough high-energy food and water to sustain each camper for the length of your trip and you will surely enjoy a fun, invigorating winter camping adventure.

Tactical LED Flashlights - Their Benefit for Outdoor and Emergency Use

By Ben Anton

If you are looking for a new flashlight for your home, for your car, or for anywhere else that you might need quality light in a hurry, you should consider a tactical flashlight or torch. A tactical torch is one that is designed to be a professional flashlight and to serve the police, military, fire services, industrial workers and other professionals. These tactical lights are available to the general public and are some of the highest quality lights around.

When looking for a tactical torch, consider one that utilizes LED light bulbs. An LED light will provide you with reliability that you just can't find in a standard flashlight. LED bulbs will outlast any traditional bulb - they have a bulb life of up to ten times longer or more, depending on the brand. An LED bulb also puts out a much more powerful beam of light. The technology used to create tactical flashlights enhances the light source so that it provides the highest lumens available when you need them.

LED flashlights also use fewer batteries over time than a traditional flashlight. This is because they draw much less power from the battery source, improving the energy efficiency of the overall flashlight. This is what ultimately makes them superior to standard handheld lights. By being more energy-efficient and consuming fewer batteries over time, an LED flashlight is the superior economic investment as well.

A tactical LED light utilizes the best features of an LED and improves upon them for maximum efficiency, brightness and durability. Tactical lights are professional flashlight quality, meaning that they are the same lights used by the law enforcement, by military professionals, and by fire fighters in some of the roughest conditions possible. That means they are much more durable devices. They can take a beating and can endure extreme conditions and situations. These torches are also developed to be easy-to-use and versatile. Many quality tactical flashlights will have focusing capabilities, allowing an officer or fireman to have both a spot light and a focused beam light at their disposal in one piece of equipment. Some lights also have strobing features and easy to use beam transitioning. These are features that are not only helpful for professionals but can be very helpful in survival situations while hunting or camping.

For the typical home owner, it may seem that a tactical flashlight would be excessive. However, knowing that no emergency is too great for your flashlight is a reassurance many families can appreciate. Having a light that can handle any kind of emergency from a tornado to a stalled car, offers you and your loved ones a special kind of peace of mind.

Tactical torches are used by many people who serve, protect and help our communities every single day. They are used because they have been proven to be reliable and easy to use even under pressure. Tactical LED lights can be used longer than standard flashlights, offer a brighter beam than even other LED lights because of the reflective technology in use with tactical lights, and are durable enough to last through almost anything.

Mini LED Flashlights - What Makes Them So Good?

By Terry Edwards

Mini LED flashlights have become more than just a convenience item, but also a safety item as well. These small flashlights that fit on your key chain have become indispensable in our daily lives. The uses for mini LED flashlights range from using them in our car to using them on a camping trip. They come in handy in dark places when a little light is all you need.

LED, or light emitting diode, is by far the better of the two bulbs. It produces a much brighter light than a standard filament bulb and lasts much longer as well.

Mini LED flashlights use a small button style battery that allows these flashlights to come in the smallest of sizes. This is also the reason that they are added to a key chain or they could easily get lost.

LED flashlights utilize 1.5V batteries that are similar to the batteries you'll find in watches. Standard mini flashlights use a 6.0V battery, which is much larger.

What makes this type of flashlight so popular? I would have to say the size makes them so convenient, as does the increased battery life due to it being an LED. But, the biggest factor would be the brightness these mini flashlights provide.

Certainly, the continued evolution of batteries and light bulbs has made flashlights much better over the years. The mini LED flashlight is proof of this improved technology.

What Is The Best LED Flashlight?

By Terry Edwards

The LED flashlight has certainly revolutionized the world of flashlights in recent years. LED, or light emitting diode bulbs, are so much better than the standard filament type bulbs. Electrons inside the bulb move around, thereby creating a more reliable and powerful light source.

LED flashlights are also extremely long lasting. In fact, you can expect to get up to 10,000 hours out of them, which blows away a regular bulb.

The LED flashlight will also require far less power to operate, meaning you'll save on battery usage. Many of these flashlights run without using batteries at all, or use rechargeable batteries that basically last forever.

You can find every different type of these flashlights available including ones on helmets, key chains and regular hand-held units. They even have kits available to convert an older model standard light into an LED model.

What is the best LED flashlight?

I would tend to go with the no battery flashlights. You can find them in the shake flashlights, winding ones and even the squeeze models.

What I like so much is the fact they have no battery to burn out or leak. How many times have you ever needed your flashlight only to find it has dead batteries? It's frustrating. Well, the shake type is great because you simply shake it a couple f times and you're good to go.

You can find LED flashlights at many stores, including your big home improvement stores. Expect to pay a little more money for these flashlights, but the benefits are well worth it. You'll get longer battery life and a better, more reliable bulb.

What's So Special About An LED Flashlight?

By Ben Anton

Flashlights can be an important part of a household. You simply never know when the electricity might go off or an emergency will take place. For emergency situations, outdoor activities or a backup in the car, a flashlight can play an important role. Traditional flashlights have not always been dependable. The batteries die quickly and without notice, the bulbs do the same and the light output fades without warning.

With LED technology, the world of flashlights has gotten a lot brighter. LED flashlights are one of the best investments in equipment you can make because they will last longer, be much more durable, and be even more dependable than regular flashlights. Many home owners and outdoor enthusiasts are choosing to replace their existing regular flashlights with LED versions because they have proven to be a more dependable, superior product that can be counted on.

There are many useful and unique features that come with an LED flashlights. The bulbs are long lasting - most bulbs will last for a minimum of 60 hours of continuous use before needing to have the batteries changed. They are also built to withstand drops and extreme temperatures without effecting the light brightness or lifespan of the bulb. This durability is unmatched by traditional flashlights. With the longer bulb life and extreme durability, the health of your flashlight will be one less thing for you to worry about.

LED flashlights are also much more energy efficient than other versions. Batteries will last 10x longer in than in any traditional flashlight because of the power efficiency of the technology. This means that fewer batteries will make their way into landfills every year. You can also use rechargeable batteries in these flashlights (many brands sell rechargeable batteries) which results in never having to throw any batteries away.

These are an important investment for you to make. Besides being good for the environment, they are good for your family. When the lights go out, or when you need to find light quickly, you don't want to be worrying about whether or not your flashlight will come on. You may have a situation where you cannot afford to be hunting in drawers or backpacks for fresh batteries. With LEDs, you can trust that they will work the first time, every time. They are durable as well, which means that whether you are taking them camping, throwing them in the trunk of your car, or simply shoving them in a kitchen drawer, they won't break on you and will still be ready to use when you get around to pulling them out. For a quality investment that will help you protect your family, you should turn to LED flashlights.

Campers and Hunters Choose Reliable and Durable LED Flashlights

By Matthew Keegan

The days of camping or hunting with an incandescent flashlight are now past as newer technology in the form of reliable and durable LED flashlights is standard equipment for outdoorsmen. This has been both a positive and significant change for the serious camper or hunter who previously had to make use of flashlights that were bulky and prone to failure. If you are planning a trip to the Grand Tetons or simply looking to replace that old flashlight housed in your trucks glove box, then a LED powered flashlight is the way to go. Let's explore the world of current lighting technology and how a LED flashlight should be a part of your standard outdoors equipment.

Incandescent lighting cannot hold a candle to a light-emitting diode or LED. Quite simply, a LED flashlight emits light via a group of miniature light bulbs that are attached to an electrical circuit. With no filament present, LED lights do not easily and inconveniently burn out as they are powered by the movements of electrons contained within a semiconductor. The larger the concentration of LED bulbs within its plastic bulb housing the greater the amount of light emitted.

Putting all of the scientific information to the side, what exactly are the reasons that a LED flashlight is so valued by campers and hunters? Well, lets count the ways as there are many:

Better All Around Lighting: LED flashlights offer a purer and brighter light than found in an incandescent flashlight. The strongest LED flashlights are able to reach as far as a mile away with a concentrated beam of light; compare that to a standard flashlight which gives decent lighting close up but quickly fades out further away.

Highly Power Efficient: If you take an incandescent flashlight with you on a trip, you better bring along some extra sets of batteries as you could run out of power midway through your expedition. With an LED flashlight, only five to ten percent of the power of a comparable light is used, saving you money and making battery replacement an uncommon event. From an environmental disposal standpoint, an LED powered flashlight is the best choice as expended batteries are kept to a bare minimum.

Much More Durable Under Tough Conditions: Who hasn't walked along a rocky trail or path and dropped their flashlight only to find it has broken apart? Basic flashlights are housed in plastic but even an incandescent flashlight made out of rubberized material is still vulnerable to trauma as one drop can break the filament rendering it inoperable. With an LED flashlight, you have use of a device that is made of tough resin and certain to last even through the harshest of conditions.

Offers Superior Resistance to Adverse Weather Conditions: Your hunting trip may have taken you far away from base, so there is nothing worse than a flashlight that is too fragile to operate in a driving rain or hold up under snow or ice. Even if you drop your LED flashlight in a body of water and quickly recover it, more than likely it will still be operating when you pick it up. Don't depend on an incandescent flashlight to offer to you the same resistance to the elements.

Is A Lightweight Device and Easy to Pack: When you are lugging gear through the woods going light makes your travels much easier. No need to carry a foot long flashlight weighing five pounds or more when a six ounce LED flashlight will do the job and better at that. You can put away the propane lantern too as LED powered lanterns are safer and lighter. That lighter load will give to you the additional room that you need to carry the hunting knife or two that every hunter must have at the ready.

When selecting an LED light your choices have never been better. Some outdoorsmen prefer to keep their hands as free as possible and opt to purchase a headband LED light. With a headband light, beams can be positioned to point in the direction that you want it to go and the light can be seen as far as 3,000 yards away. A dimmer switch also permits an LED headband light to have another use: you can strap it on when you need to take a look under the hood of your car.

Finally, you can find LED flashlights that serve a number of other different purposes including for professional use, fishing, emergencies, and more. Chances are you already own at least one LED flashlight, but considering its many uses owning only one certainly may not be enough.

Getting to Know an LED Hunting Flashlight

By Ben Anton

While in the wilderness, a hunter has only his wits and hunting gear to rely upon. It is only through sheer cunning and the proper equipment that a hunter can hope to successfully complete a hunting objective safely. Not every hunter may have the smarts and skill necessary to achieve a hunting goal, but all hunters have the potential to have the proper hunting gear to help them.

Starting with the basic hunting gear and making sure that it is appropriate is the best first step toward a successful hunting trip. Where safety is concerned, one primary piece of hunting gear is a reliable, high quality flashlight, like and LED tactical torch or professional flashlight.

There are many different aspects that set professional quality hunting flashlights apart from your everyday flashlight. Lesser quality lights use inefficient poor quality incandescent bulbs. For an activity like hunting, LED technology really is the better option. High-intensity LED bulbs give off a brighter, clearer light for greater distances. They also have a much longer bulb and battery life, making them more energy efficient and less expensive to maintain in the long run.

Many professional hunting flashlights also include a variety of different LED light colors to help preserve night vision. With lower quality incandescent flashlights, you will rarely find multiple light functionality. However with professional hunting flashlights there are many options available that include more than one light bulb color within the same flashlight housing. For instance, a professional LED flashlight may include a hyper bright white light, and then a dimmer green or red bulb for use when reading equipment, maps or instructions in the dark. These alternate colors help sustain night vision without creating light noise in the surrounding area. This is a highly important feature for sportsmen looking for versatility in a compact form factor, virtually eliminating the need to carry around multiple light sources.

Many hunting LED flashlights also offer dimming light functions so that hunters can choose the exact light level necessary to complete whatever task. Dimmable bulbs are important for preserving night vision, as well as the ability not to spook nearby animals with overly bright lights. This focusing and dimming of light beams is usually controlled by a simple switch or knob that can be operated with ease using one hand.

Form factor can also play a large role in what separates a professional quality hunting flashlight from a standard flashlight. Sportsmen are usually overrun with the hunting gear that they have to carry. Having a small, durable, and light weight flashlight is highly important. Additionally the flashlight must be easy to grip in all kinds of conditions - hunters may need to operate a flashlight with wet or muddy hands or while wearing bulky gloves.

Lights for hunting don't always have to take the form of a flashlight or torch. Many hunters will take a sturdy lantern or lamp with them to help bathe a larger area in light, like a base camp area or a kill site. LED lanterns offer the same simple switch capabilities, bright light, and battery efficiency as their flashlight counterparts. Others wear a headlamp or flex light on their head or attached to their vest so that they have a small, powerful light at the ready and still have full use of their hands.

Hunting takes skill. It takes practice. It takes appreciation for nature. It also takes quality equipment. Don't settle for anything less than the best hunting light available when putting together your hunting fear.
